Recently in Japan, the main keyword/stars for Hanllyu (Korean Wave) is the 5 member Idol group TVXQ. Last week, TVXQ swept away 2 #1’s in 2 categories on the Oricon Chart, which can also express Japan’s popular artist’s popularity most accurately. It is clear that TVXQ's a top star in the J-Pop industry.
Recently (30th of last month), the news of their release of the ‘4th Live Tour 2009 ~ The Secret Code FINAL in TOKYO DOME ~’ DVD, which sold about 171,000 copies ranked #1 on Oricon Weekly DVD Ranking became a huge topic. It was because it was the first time a Foreigner who is Asian had ranked top in the DVD/Video category.
On the same day, TVXQ’s member Hero Jaejoong & Micky Yoochun who formed a special unit ‘JEJUNG & YUCHUN ’ with their single ‘ Colors ~ Melody & Harmony ~ / Shelter ’ ranked #1 as well, with 149,363 sales in just the first week. To accomplish this much with just 2 members, is proof of TVXQ’s Popularity in Japan.
TVXQ/THSK, Korean Idol group is grabbing lots of attention in Japan. As a foreigners, who overcame language barrier and culture differences, what was their secret to rising to the top in J-Pop.
● The difference & attraction between THSK & JE Idol
It is not an overstatement when you say that groups from Johnny’s (focuses on male idol groups) have a tight grip on Japan’s male idol market. For many years, Johnny’s have specialized and focused on male idol groups by debuting many groups fitting Japanese women’s tastes.
Johnny’s group Arashi, Smap, NEWS, Kinki Kids, Tokio, V6 etc, who are also known in Korea, have been on top of music charts, movies, shows etc(in Japan). Because of this, in 2005 with their debut single “Stay with me Tonight”, many people did not think or expect THSK to get results like they have today.
However, THSK showed a different charm to those females who have been so used/accustomed to Johnny’s boy idols. It was that they were a group with both singing and dancing talents. This is also similar to when BoA caused a big stir in the Japanese female idol market earlier in 2000.
Instead of vocal skills, Johnny’s Idol groups are focused more on performance and image making, and have captured female fans with their looks. You can notice that many of them have/use a nasal sound and aren’t vocally skilled, but with their image, made from their appearances in a variety of programs, drama, movies etc, they have captured many fans and is why they are at top in the music industry.
Since their debut in Korea, TVXQ has been known as an “Acapella Dance Group” and have proved so with their harmony, and excellent live performances. Also, another big part of an Idol’s popularity is dance, (such as hip hop, jazz dance, etc.) which U-Know Yunho(also TVXQ) are skilled in. TVXQ's performances overpower Johnny's Artists performances because of the diverse/variety of performances they perform.
Unlike Johnny’s Group, who are elegant, skinny, and the pretty faced type, which Japanese women like, TVXQ was more focused on bringing out each members individuality/personality and at the same time, with their tall heights, their fit bodies through exercise etc. they emphasized on manliness.
● One step at a time... continuous challenge to the top
In less than a year, BoA became a top star in Japan. In 2002 with her first album "Listen to my Heart" which sold nearly 1 million copies, ranked #1 on the Oricon Weekly ranking which was a big topic in both Korea & Japan.
The biggest success achieved for a Korean singer that debuted in the J-POP industry, would be BoA. From the start, it was solid that BoA was to debut in Japan. Because of this, she was able to understand the Japanese culture as well learn the language and was able to guest on variety of programs without giving a feel of a foreigner. This was one of key factors that gained BoA’s big popularity amongst the people.
But, THSK was different from BoA. They were not proficient in the language, and nor did they mainly focus on their Japanese activities, which took longer for them to rise to the top. Their first #1 on Oricon Daily Single chart was in 2008 with their 16th single “Purple Line”.
“Purple Line” did rank #1, but did not receive much attention due to low sales.
“Only Japanese woman(ahjumma) who are into the Korean wave likes them” “Korean fans bought CD’s in Japan as a whole to rank them #1 on Oricon Chart” was what came out.
TVXQ did not think too much with results. Depending on the results (of their activities, sales, and what was said etc.), they did not let that bring them down, nor did they let it get to their heads, but instead they continued with their activities in both Korea & Japan and step by step adapted to the culture. As singers, they have gained Japanese fans with their talent through stages big and small. Avex, Japan's leading record label and company has supported/brought up BoA, and is also highly praising TVXQ's potential/talent and is actively supporting them.
Due to their constant efforts and challenge, they were able to achieve 2 Oricon's in 2 different categories last week and their sales have increased compared to the past. In one week, over 170,000 copies of their DVD’s sold, and at the same time, sold about 150,000 copies of their single. TVXQ has grown into a talented group who you can call J-Pop’s top Idol group.

Birth of a special project unit! Triggered by Yuchun
The pair’s project “Colors –Melody and Harmony” was born, whose idea was it?
YC: Mine. It was probably on the day just as we were recording “Endlessly Sweet - Amaku Hatehinaku”. I was originally preparing a solo for Tokyo Dome, but suddenly on that day, I thought, “Ah, I want to do it with Jejung.” I’ve worked with Jejung before in composing, and I thought that it would be perfect if we were partners this time. I asked, “Do you want to do it together?” He said “Yes, let’s do it.”
JJ: It was beautiful. At that time, I was worrying about what to do for my solo, and I thought it was a good idea. –So I decided to go with it at once.
YC: The two of us decided really quickly.
JJ: It was almost trivial (laughs). But we had our goal set.
-How did you want to make the song when you were discussing about it?
JJ: We’ve decided from the very beginning. Because we wanted to sing this song at the Tokyo Dome with all 50,000 people, we wanted to make a simple and bright melody. But, because Yuchun had already heard a song I arranged earlier, he suggested, “Let’s go with this one.” (laughs)
YC: Because it was a good song.
JJ: But it was troublesome.
YC: Not at all. I was troubled because I haven’t improved in composing, and it was a really good arrangement. It fit exactly the image of singing with 50,000 people. Because it’s his first bright song in all the songs he composed, I really wanted to use that arrangement.
-Really? The title Melody & Harmony is really beautiful. Because it was only the two of you, the song felt really fresh.
YC: We felt pressured about the harmony. We thought we couldn’t harmonize well with only the two of us singing.
-It’s already perfect, isn’t it?
JJ: I suppose it’s good. We worked really hard on it.
Required credit check. Did anyone else participate in composing?
-The atmosphere of the other song “Shelter” is really mature.
JJ: Actually, I’m really proud of this one.
-Well then, did the work go smoothly?
JJ: It took a long time~.
YC: I had trouble with the rap. There was more than I thought there would be. (laughs)
JJ: But it was a new discovery, right? I told him, “Yuchun’s good at this rap!” (laughs). And, oh yes, please look at the credits. There! Junsu’s name is included in composing the song!
-You’re right! Eh, why?
JJ: At first, I was recording the demo in my own room, but the chorus just wouldn’t come out. And then, Junsu burst into my room saying, “Let me try singing it.” And for 10 minutes, he just sang it and said, “Isn’t this great?” and left after. (laughs). But this was vexing…
YC: It’s a good melody, isn’t it?
JJ: Yes. Thanks to him we were able to finish the song. We put his name there because of that one moment.
-Good story. (laughs) I think it’s a wonderful single that satisfies you because you can feel the charm of two very different extremes.
YC: There’s no in-between song. (laughs)
JJ: But there is a connection between these two songs. They are similar in that they both say “Thank you” in the lyrics.
-What do you want the listeners to feel from this single?
YC: Kindness.
JJ: I would be happy if they can see a new side of us through this song

YC: Ini ide ku. Mungkin ketika kami melakukan sesi rekaman untuk "Endlessly Sweet - Amaki Hateshinaku". Sebenarnya saya disuruh untuk mempersiapkan sebuat solo untuk Tokyo Dome, tapi tiba-tiba saja pada hari itu saya berpikir, "Ah, saya ingin melakukan nya dengan Jejung." Sebelumnya saya bekerja dengan Jejung dalam hal membuat lagu, dan saya berpikir akan sangat sempurna jika kami menjadi partner kali ini. Saya bertanya," Apakah kamu ingin melakukannya bersama?" Dia menjawab "Ya, mari lakukan."
JJ: Sangat bagus. Pada saat itu, saya merasa cemas apa yang akan saya tampilkan untuk solo, dan saya pikir ide ini cukup bagus. -Jadi saya memutuskan untuk melakukannya.
YC: Kami berdua memutuskan dengan sangat cepat.
JJ: Itu hampir tidak penting (tertawa). Tapi kami sudah memiliki tujuan.
-Bagaimana cara kalian membuat lagu ketika kalian sedang mendiskusikannya?
JJ: Kami memutuskan sejak awal. Karena kami ingin menyanyikan lagu ini di Tokyo Dome di depan 50.000 orang, kami berharap membuat lagu yang simpel dan memiliki melodi yang indah. Tetapi, karena Yuchun telah mendengar lagu yang telah ku buat sebelumnya, ia memberi saran, "Mari gunakan lagu ini." (tertawa)
YC: Karena itu lagu yang bagus.
JJ: Tapi bermasalah.
YC: Tidak juga. Saya merasa sulit ketika saya tidak dapat berkembang dalam menciptakan lagu, dan lagu itu memiliki aransemen yang bagus. Lagu itu memiliki image yang tepat untuk dinyanyikan di depan 50.000 orang. Karena lagu itu merupakan karyanya yang paling bersinar diantara karya lainnya, saya ingin menggunakan aransemen itu.
-Benarkah? Tema Melody & Harmony sangat indah. Karena hanya kalian berdua saja, lagu ini terasa sangat menyegarkan.
YC: Kami merasa adanya tekanan pada harmoni. Kami berpikir kami tidak dapat berharmonisasi dengan baik karena hanya kami berdua saja yang bernyanyi.
- Sudah sempurna bukan?
JJ: Saya rasa sudah baik. Kami benar-benar bekerja keras.
Membutuhkan credit. Apakah ada orang lain yang ikut dalam pembuatan lagu?
- Atmosfir dari lagu lain "Shelter" sangat dewasa.
JJ: Sebenarnya, saya sangat bangga dengan karya ini,
- Jadi, apakah pekerjaan berjalan dengan lancar?
JJ: Membutuhkan waktu yang cukup lama~.
YC: Saya mengalami kesulitan pada bagian rap. Ada banyak daripada yang saya pikirkan. (tertawa)
JJ: Tapi ini merupakan penemuan baru bukan begitu? Saya memberitahunya, "Yuchun bagus pada rap ini!" (tertawa). Dan juga, tolong lihat pada bagian credits. Disana! Nama Junsu termasuk dalam daftar pencipta lagu!
- Kamu benar! Eh, mengapa?
JJ: Saat pertama, saya sedang mengambil rekaman untuk demo di ruangan ku, tapi bagian chorus/reff tidak muncul. Kemudian, Junsu mendadak masuk ke ruanganku dan berkata, "Biarkan saya coba menyanyikannya." Setelah 10 menit, ia menyanyikannya dan berkata, "Bukankah ini bagus?" dan langsung pergi begitu saja. (tertawa). Tapi ini memuakkan... (T/N: Junsu pergi begitu saja tanpa berkata apa-apa pada Jejung)
YC: Melodi yang indah, bukankah begitu?
JJ: Ya. Berkat dia kami dapat menyelesaikan lagu ini. Kami menaruh namanya di sana karena kejadian itu.
- Cerita yang bagus. (tertawa) Saya rasa ini adalah single indah yang akan memuaskan mu karena kamu dapat merasakan daya tarik berbeda yang dimiliki kedua lagu.
YC: Tidak ada koneksi yang begitu mendalam pada setiap lagu. (tertawa)
JJ: Tapi ada sedikit koneksi antara kedua lagu. Ada kemiripan penyampaian "Terima kasih" dalam lirik pada kedua lagu tersebut.
- Apa yang ingin kalian sampaikan kepada pendengar melalui single ini?
YC: Kemurahan hati.
JJ: Saya akan senang bila mereka dapat melihat sisi lain dari kami berdua melalui lagu ini.

DongBangShinKi attended the court for an agreement but failed.
TVXQ’s Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu submit today in court, despite the court’s mediation efforts to reach a consensus.
In the past three months, DBSK members and SM Ent attended at the Seoul Central District Court to coordinate the process of the case. The court agreed that both sides should come up with an amicable decision but because of the differences between each other, the agreement did not end the conflict.
For TVXQ “They have the deep feeling that their goal which is changing their work conditions seems to be difficult to reach”.
The court is planning to make a difficult decision for both sides later in the month.
Meanwhile last July 31st, the 3 members of Dong Bang Shin Ki 3 filled an exclusive contract validity suspension and provisional disposition request.

Sementara itu terakhir Juli 31, 3 anggota Dong Bang Shin Ki 3 diisi validitas kontrak eksklusif suspensi dan disposisi sementara permintaan.

pada tanggal 28 oktober lalu, Starnews berkesempatan untuk mewawancarai Sejong(kantor pengacara junsu,yoochun,jaejoong) melalui telepon. mereka mengatakan bahwa Jaejoong,Junsu dan Yoochun akan tetap bergabung dengan TVXQ dan tidak pernah punya niatan untuk meninggalkan mereka.
mengenai masalah kontrak, mereka mengatakan bahwa kontrak akan segera di rombak dalam beberapa minggu ini. selain itu saat disinggung masalah 2 member lainnya; Yunho dan Changmin, mereka mengatakan bahwa mereka tidak dapat memastikan bagaimana kelanjutan bersama keduanya. bahkan mereka juga berkata, “tak ada yang bisa kami katakn tentang hal itu”

saat penyerahan data2 ke pengadilan...data SM ditolak..sampai akhirnya SM hendak menarik data2nya lagi tp hal tersebut di tolak oleh pengadilan..
dari situ lah SM mulai mengada2 dengan mengatakan bahwa DBSK telah banyak merugikan SM,tidak pernah memberikan keuntungan..*kya!!kubakar lu pada*...padahal dulu kala SM pernah bilang bahwa pemasok keuntungan terbanyak adalah hasil kegiatan TVXQ di jepang...
Seorang ahli musik industri di Korea mengatakan bahwa susah untuk DBSK tetap bersatu menjadi DBSK apalgi dengan situasi seperti ini dimana DBSK terpisah menjadi 2 group (YunHo n ChangMin not suing SM….tp bg gw mereka bukanna terpisah tp aku yakin YunHo and ChangMin punya pemikiran sendiri)…
katanya sih katanya....si yunho lebih mementingkan keadaan financial keluarganya...
dan dia tidak mau nama dbsk jd terpangaruh gara2 konflik ini...*leader yg baik*
